How do living plants and inorganic materials interact?

This is the basis for my latest artistic endeavor:  growing living orchids on ceramic sculptures.  

  Epiphytic orchids are evolutionarily adapted to live in trees so I find it wildly interesting to watch their growth patterns manifest over the canvas of my clay designs. 

Have you ever watched a Coelogyne species grow and bloom through its successive generations?  (...dont even get me started on the Bulbophyllums!)  

Where most people see an orchid's beauty through their flower blossom- I see the plant's inherent beauty within their naturally growing form and functionality as an epiphyte- a plant evolved to live uniquely exposed to the air while clinging to the branches of a tree.     I'd like to share this perspective with you through my art.

Let me help you grow the luxuriant garden of your dreams.... like this private estate garden I did in Palm Beach in the mid 2000's

 I enjoy creating lush landscapes using tropical foliage, edible fruits and medicinal plants.  One of my  specialties is naturalizing orchids and other exotics throughout the garden.  

Ecosystem Implementation

Check out the Northwestern Hawaiian Island aquarium exhibit at the Mokupapapa Discovery Center to see an example of my custom specialty ecosystems.  This is a 2500 gallon closed-loop recirculating saltwater invertebrate aquarium that I designed, installed, and managed at their new location in downtown Hilo. I feel extremely lucky and blessed for that opportunity to create a new system from the ground up and to have been able to collect rare and sensitive species from the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument in order to display the living wonder of these remote Hawaiian coral atolls for the public.

I specialize in growing orchids. They capture my imagination and hold my attention in ways unlike other plants. Their epiphytic nature provides unique opportunities for utilizing organic and inorganic substrates to create remarkable living works of art.

The wondrously adaptive and ephemeral nature of orchid flowers inspire me with their savage beauty. Each species' wildly individual growth habit also nurtures my imagination for finding ways to cultivate their vegetative growth using radical sculptural motifs.
